LUCKNOW: It was an alert passenger who exposed a ticket fraud at a small station, Sonik, between Lucknow and Kanpur. On Friday, Lucknow division authorities cancelled the license of the agent who was authorized to sell tickets at the station.
The agent was manually writing the cost of the ticket and charging extra fare from passengers. He was vending a plain ticket and hand-writing fare on it. Whether it was a deliberate move or a technical glitch is yet to be established by railways.
But it was the photo of the ticket sent to the railway officers by one of the passengers on WhatsApp that exposed the fraud. Passenger had bought the ticket to travel from Sonik to Manaknagar on May 29. While railways' fare table said Rs 10 should have been charged for the distance, agent wrote Rs 40 on the ticket.
